Samantha Leibowitz Exclusive Designer Interview
Collection & Designer Name: Samantha Leibowitz
Production: CAAFD Collective Showcase
Show: 9/10/17 NYFW SS18
Location: Pier59 Chelsea Piers
What was the concept behind this season’s collection?
Today is going to be a texture line. Your going to see a lot of silver, black, and white and all different textures within these fabrications, that have been inspired by different buildings within Manhattan’s region.
Did you study fashion or is it a passion of yours?
I have been in the industry for twelve years now. I started when I was fourteen years old. I went to West Virginia and majored in Designing, Merchandising, and Business Management. I am a certified colorist and I’m now guest lecturing at Parsons fashion school as well.
Do you prefer to design F/W or S/S collections?
Spring & Summer. I am definitely a warm person weather wise. It’s very hard for me when it comes to winter because I have to put on my mind cap and think what would I really want to wear when I’m freezing cold. We have our Samantha Girl, she’s out there. She is fun and adventurous but it’s called Dawn to Dust. She wants to wear her outfit to work and go out to dinner after and be able to have that trend and look on point!
What’s some advice you would give an aspiring fashion designer?
Word hard and get anywhere you can. I worked for eight different companies starting at fourteen years old before I even launched mine. I worked in every department possible. I would really say the more you push yourself in there the more your going to succeed in life.
What demographic population do you cater to?
I really try to do a variety within our collections. Our collections are always over twenty pieces so usually it’s yield more Northeast slightly with a little bit of prep but not too much. I wouldn’t say we’re like BoHo LA by any means but I definitely think some of our classics workout in the Southern regions on the West Coast.
