Why did you choose fashion designing as a career?

I have always been interested in fashion but did not think of it seriously as a career until I began competing in the Miss America System. As a twelve  year old, I competed in my first local Maryland pageant and needed a talent. As I was taking a summer sewing class, my dad suggested fashion design. There was a Miss America 1961 who also did fashion design so I went for it. Each year I created a new collection for competition and my interest in fashion design grew from there.

What things outside of fashion, inspire your clothing

I look to classic movies, museums, travel, music and my family for inspiration.

What were your inspirations for the designed you created for the Baltimore Show?

This collection is a combination of evening wear from several previous collections. Two looks were inspired by Audrey Hepburn and Breakfast at Tiffany's, another by the flamenco music my mom listen's to, my ideal wedding dress and the finale piece is inspired by my brother's uniform at the Virginia Military Institute.

Do you prefer ready-to-wear or concept when it comes to your runway shows?

I like a mix of practical and fantasy.

What is the most challenging part about being a fashion designer?

For me, it has been difficult to be taken seriously as a fashion designer because of my young age and a general lack of understanding and education of the field of design as a serious art.

Rules are meant to be broken, which are your favorite fashion rules to break?

I don't pay attention to the rules.

What skills according to you are necessary for a successful fashion designer?

Attention to the fit and comfort of the garment are very important.

Where do you see (Line Name) in the next 5 years?

This fall I will begin studying Fashion at Moore College of Art and Design. I hope to serve my internship with Lazaro in New York. Upon graduating, I would like to open my own boutique specializing in prom, pageant and bridal dresses under my Karyn K Fashions label.
