MAJ Designs Exclusive Designer Interview
NYFW Show: MAJ Designs
Date: September 12, 2017
Tell us who you are and the name of the collection this season.
Jaime: I’m Jaime Johnson
Tara: I’m Tara Perez and the name of the collection is “Forget Me Not.”
What was the concept behind the collection this season?
Jaime: There are a lot of early 60’s inspired looks with a little bit of an edge to them.
Did either of you study fashion or is this a passion?
Jaime: No, this has been a passion of mine since I was a young child. I actually studied architecture in school.
Tara: I briefly went to school for it but I’m mainly self taught and from Jaime.
How did you two meet?
Jaime: Through Tara’s sister actually. I was looking for somebody to help me as an assistant about five years ago and her sister is one of my friends and told me she would love to do it. Now here we are!
What was the process like picking out the garments and fabrics?
Jaime: First we came up with a color and design scheme. Then from there we didn’t design our own fabric, we had to search for it and that was difficult.
Tara: We flew to New York from Alaska for a fabric trip and found nothing. We actually found all our fabric in Alaska.
When it comes to breaking the rules of fashion, do you see yourself ever doing so?
Jaime: For sure!
How durable are your garments?
Jaime: Very durable. Some of the looks on the runway have already gone through two photoshoots.
Tara: One shoot was in Alaska on the rocks. We’re Alaska girls, everything we do is durable.
What’s some advice you would give an aspiring fashion designer?
Jaime: If you want it, go for it! Don’t let anything stop you.
Tara: Definitely follow your dreams. Do what you want, it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks.
What’s next for MAJ Designs?
Jaime: Hopefully a fall season!
